Nikki and James recently tied the knot at Kay and Monty surrounded by their closest family and friends. With the most stunning white roses, peonies and tulips, our glass and steel venue looked spectacular. We chatted to Nikki and James about what made them choose Kay and Monty as their venue, their unique wedding style and their top planning tips.

HOW DID YOU MEET? AND THE PROPOSAL?

We initially met at UCT but met properly in London when I moved there in 2013. We were at a dinner with mutual friends and one thing led to another and, as they say… the rest is history!

James proposed a couple of days after my best friend’s wedding, on the morning of Christmas Eve in Plett. It was about 5am, and knowing that I am not good with surprises (and him being so nervous) he proposed in our room after waking me up (although I was still half asleep). We then went for a lovely walk on the beach to take it all in and just be together before telling anyone. Both our families were in Plett for Christmas that year so it made it such an exceptionally special Christmas for us to all be together and celebrate.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE KAY AND MONTY AS YOUR WEDDING VENUE?

I have been coming to Plett since I was a child and more recently James has come every year too. We also got engaged in Plett, so it is an incredibly special place for us as a couple. Kay and Monty just stood out for us (and our anticipated numbers) and seemed to bring our two worlds together. James in from Natal and loves the Midlands and on the day we went to go see Kay and Monty it just seemed like a place that brought the Midlands to Plett. We loved the laid-back nature of the farm and it is, of course, just such a beautiful venue.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING STYLE…

I would describe our wedding as classic and romantic. We went for a very simple but chic look with a white and green theme that carried throughout. It had a very relaxed atmosphere – we just wanted all our family and friends to have fun and enjoy celebrating with us.

WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR WEDDING DAY?

Our actual wedding day went by so unbelievably quickly (you never quite believe people when they tell you how quickly it goes but it really, really flies).

I think the entire day will forever be a highlight for me but some standout moments include my bridesmaids dancing around me while my make-up was being done. They kept me sane and we had such a special morning getting ready. Another highlight was standing back and taking a moment between our couple shoot to just look over at all our family and friends really having fun and just having that rare moment together to take it all in.

I have to say, it is quite hard to pinpoint the highlights. We had an incredible team of suppliers and wedding planners who made it so easy for us to just enjoy our entire day. I often wish I could go back and do it all again – we had that much fun!

YOUR TOP TIP FOR PLANNING A WEDDING?

1. Stay calm (try at least) and attempt not to argue over the small details.

2. Be open minded – you never know what may appeal to you, even when you thought it never would.

3. Enjoy every second, even when you are frustrated. Once the planning is over it’s over, just enjoy and take it all in.

ANY LOCAL SERVICE PROVIDERS THAT YOU WOULD RECOMMEND?

1. Pippa’s Flowers – for making our green and white theme come to life.

2. Joe and Dan, our photographers, for really capturing every moment so exquisitely.

3. Nicky’s Cakes & Bakes – for creating our dream cake.
