Situated in the far north of the Kruger National Park, The Outpost sits on land that holds deep historical, cultural and spiritual meaning for the Makuleke people; the custodians of this region and the rightful owners of the Pafuri Triangle. This day is not just a celebration – it is a tribute to resilience, connection and community.
In 1969, during the apartheid-era forced removals, the Makuleke people were displaced from this land. It was a devastating event that separated a community from its roots. Almost 30 years later and after a protracted legal battle, the land was officially returned to them through one of South Africa’s first and most notable land restitution cases.
Rather than move back onto the land themselves, the Makuleke people chose a path of environmental and cultural conservation. Their landmark agreement with SANParks allowed the land to be leased to the Kruger and for private partnerships – like the one with The Outpost – which help the community to retain the conservation status of the land while at the same time contributing towards improving the livelihoods of its members. In this way, the Makuleke actively participate in the management and preservation of this extraordinary wilderness while ensuring the long term economic sustainability of their people.
We are extremely proud that the majority of our team at the lodge are members of the Makuleke community, with their connection to this place being felt in every detail of your stay – from the stories shared on game drives to the music and traditions you may experience during your time with us. This harmonious partnership with Rare Earth Retreats and the other concessionaires is a leading example of the value and benefit of sustainable tourism in South Africa.
We are privileged to be able to provide a means by which this land and its people can be honoured. This is more than just a remote corner of the Kruger; it is a living, breathing landscape with a rich cultural history that tells the story of its current owners as well as the civilisations that preceded it. And today, more than ever, we’re reminded of the importance of that legacy. Makuleke Day is a chance to reflect, to celebrate and to honour the people who make The Outpost — and the greater Pafuri region — what it is. We’re grateful to share it with you.
Designed to allow a seamless connection with nature, the striking, minimalist architecture of The Outpost is complemented by the raw beauty of the Northern Kruger. Here, you’ll find yourself immersed in the exhilarating wilderness of the most remote section of the Park; a region boasting 80% of its biodiversity. Discover The Outpost »
